Meet The R29 Readers That Helped Design Our New Plus Size Collection With Eloquii

When Refinery29 reader Danae Jones joined Mad Chatter, R29’s “insider community,” she didn’t expect to be part of designing a clothing collection, but that’s exactly what happened. Jones and about 20 other Mad Chatter members took a survey about plus size fashion and next thing they knew, they were handpicked to get involved in developing Refinery29’s new collection with plus size brand Eloquii. The collection, called The Weekender, includes 27 pieces and has been over a year in the making. It includes everything from jackets to dresses to denim, and each and every piece was inspired by the input of readers-turned-brand ambassadors just like Danae Jones.

“I truly felt like I was a part of something and my thoughts and ideas really mattered,” Jones tells me. “It was such a cool experience to see this line go from mood boards to an actual clothing line.”

Like most plus size shoppers, Jones knew exactly what she wanted to see in a collection, sharing that “fashionable clothes that fit well [but] weren’t boxy” were a must for her. “I don’t know why being over a size 12 means frumpy in the retail world, but sometimes that’s all you get.”

The Weekender collection by R29 and Eloquii is anything but boxy or frumpy, with pieces like patent leather mini skirts and flirty floral dresses filling out the fall capsule wardrobe.

Darte Lamptey is another Mad Chatter member who helped develop and shape the collaborative collection, and she says that that patent leather mini skirt is her favorite piece, but that she loves the fun patterns and striking shades used as well.

“I wanted to see a lot of print and bold colors, which they did above and beyond,” Laptey says. “Growing up, I stayed away from prints and bright colors because I was sometimes told I was too dark-skinned or certain prints weren’t appealing for my body shape. “

Lamptey’s experience echoes those of so many plus size women who have struggled (and still struggle) to find modern, trend-focused clothing that feels more focused on style than it does on trying to put plus size shoppers in a box. The truth is that all women want the same thing — clothing that feels relevant, cool, and fun.

Naja Innis, another Refinery29 reader involved in the development of the collection, tells us that coolness is what she wanted out of this line — even if that term does feel somewhat relative.

“Plus sized fashion can be so one-note sometimes,” Innis says. “As plus sized women, we’re often expected to over-dress to avoid being labeled as sloppy. I never felt comfortable in overly feminine clothing…I want women to allow themselves to be comfortable and just… chill.” Innis tells us that “if at least one woman finds the piece of her dreams that lets her feel like a model off-duty,” then she’d feel satisfied with her involvement in creating the designs.

Mad Chatter members (or Mad Chatters as they sometimes call themselves) weren’t just involved in the initial development of this, line, though. They also modeled the collection and got to experience each and every piece themselves, in person.

“We weren’t just lucky MCs, we were part of the team — on a project that had started almost two years ago,” Mad Chatter Lee Ann Hollinger says. “I had goosebumps the first time I got to see and feel the quality of the collection…”

As Lamptey says, the collection is a true reflection of plus size women being at the forefront of creating the best, most sought-after size-inclusive options right now. If no one else is going to create size inclusive, trendy clothing, then plus size women (and the companies that support them, like Eloquii and Refinery29) will always do it themselves — and they’ll do it well.“We’re in a time where inclusivity is at the forefront, and this collection really helps to embrace that,” Laptey says.

Scroll on to see some of the Mad Chatters modeling The Weekender collection by Refinery29 x Eloquii — and most importantly themselves. It’s available to purchase now on Eloquii.com.

Ikea’s New Collection Was Designed For Cool Weather Coziness

Who better to school us on the art of coziness than the Scandinavians? After all, the Danes gave us Hygge and the Swedes gave us the soothing clean lines of Ikea furniture. (Sure, some not-so-soothing assembly is required.) And this season, Ikea is leaning all the way into fall with one of the coziest, warmest, and chillest collections we’ve seen: Värmer.

Summer is officially over next week. These last few weeks have likely been packed with the many lasts of summer festivities: the last beach day, the last barbecue, the final rooftop sunset. But now it’s time to rotate the closet and get used to the PSL’s.

If spring is for refreshing and summer is for updating, then fall is for hibernating and preparing our bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens for shorter daylight hours. You’ll need: surfaces on which to pile holiday gifts, blankets for cuddling, baskets for holding books and magazines, and all kinds of containers for soups and teas. Available this October, this new collection has all the colorways and textures that look best on an overcast day. Some of the items are already available online, but the full collection will be available online and in stores on October 1st. Here we compiled the items that will look best when the rain is pitter-pattering on your window.

Värmer Cups

Yes, hooking your hand into a mug's handle is half the fun of sipping on some tea. But with these, you can cup your hands all around for maximum coziness.

Värmer Tray

ELOQUII & Refinery29 Launched The First Crowdsourced Plus-Size Collection — & Here’s The Lookbook

It's no secret that the fashion industry is lacking when it comes to serving plus size shoppers. Most designers don't offer sizes above a 10/12, despite the fact that the average American woman is between a size 16 and 18. Even the brands that do practice size inclusivity still fall short. Some retailers only sell their plus size pieces online, and not in stores. Others house plus size items in a totally different section of the store, reinforcing the idea that curvy shoppers aren't welcome or valued. It makes shopping for clothes as a plus size woman a harrowing experience, even as the collective market represents over $20 billion in buying power.

With that being said, there are a few plus size brands leading the charge. One such retailer is ELOQUII, a beloved brand known for its expert fit and top-notch style. Yesterday, Refinery29 announced a new history-making collab with ELOQUII, the first-ever crowdsourced plus size collection. Dubbed The Weekender, the 27-piece collection was designed to fit all your weekend needs, from slinky slip dresses and leopard print skirts to boyfriend jeans and leather moto jackets — all available in sizes 12 to 28.

"My words were put into action," one of the 29 chosen ambassadors, or 'The Weekenders,' says in the campaign's video. "I feel very proud of that." Another revels in the fact that the design team went into this process keeping women's feelings and expectations at the forefront of their minds.

This sentiment wasn't just felt by the ambassadors, but also by the team creating the collection. "The Weekender is not just a clothing line to me," Refinery29 Senior Creative, Laura Delarato says. "This is my love letter to every plus-size woman who never felt heard in her style wants. This is for every girl who was told she could only shop in the accessory section. This is for her, by her, and made with her at the forefront of every decision.”

Orbital Piercings Are Our Favorite Fall Accessory

$

Anti-tragus. Conch. Tash rook. These are just some of the cartilage piercings on a long list of ones we love. But for as rad as they look, the particular spot takes a long time to heal (think: 3-5 months). Luckily, there's another option that's equally as cool but comes with a shorter healing process. Meet the orbital piercing.

Similar to an industrial piercing, the orbital features two holes connected by one piece of jewelry, but instead of being pierced with a bar, it uses a tiny hoop. While the short healing period (around 8-10 weeks) is a bonus, it's the placement that's the biggest selling point. Orbital piercings on the earlobe are less painful than cartilage piercings, and the unique placement makes them the perfect addition to your existing constellation piercing.

Feeling inspired? Ahead, the cutest orbital piercings from New York and L.A. piercers on Instagram.
Body Electric owner and piercer Brian Keith Thompson explains that the trickiest part about an orbital piercing is making sure you have the exact measurements for both holes. "Don't be afraid to have your piercer write down the dimensions [of the two holes]," he explains. "That way, you'll know what size jewelry to get once it's healed."
Good news: Lobe piercings fall relatively low on the piercing pain spectrum. "The lobe is this spongy, fatty, soft area of your ear, so pushing a needle through is like pushing a hot knife through butter," Thompson once told Refinery29. "But if you come in and are looking for multiple piercings on the lobe, then the second, third, and so on will continue to hurt more than the last." Even so, the discomfort is nothing like a nipple piercing...
Do you want to know what goes perfectly with a double helix piercing? A stacked lobe filled with single studs and an orbital diamond.
Depending on the size of your lobe, you can cover a lot of ground with dainty earrings. For example, this ear is decorated in not one, but four lobe piercings, including an orbital to split up the first and second.
Chain-mail jewelry seems to be the "it" accessory for fall, so why not put it through your newest orbital piercing?
And an extra-long chain-mail earring can delicately connect a helix to your orbital piercing.

Don’t Be Shy About Wearing London’s Biggest Street Style Trend

Fashion Month’s street-style stars have checked another city off the list: London. And with their presence, the foggy metropolis's historic, narrow streets became mini-runways hailing from all sides of the proverbial pond. We’re not sure what’s in the water — or the tea — in the royals’ hometown, but freak flags were flying high this fashion week, and we saw plenty of punk-inflected looks replete with rainbow-colored hair, new-wave sunglasses, and leather.

However, it was a different rock-and-roll adjacent garment — or, more accurately, undergarment — that re-appeared again and again, to the extent that we had no choice but to crown it the reigning must-have of London Fashion Week. The humble bra in all of its many iterations (from a sporty crop top to a shiny, satiny corset) was out in full force this season: we saw it cinching tops and shirtdresses, peeking out from under blazers and wrap tops, showing boldly underneath sheer tops, or simply worn solo. Inspired, we rounded up the best innerwear-as-outerwear that we could find. Click through to see our shopping picks — if you dare.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. All product details reflect the price and availability at the time of publication. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.
We wouldn’t want to hide a bra this cool, either — especially when it shares a color story with a fall-ready plaid puff-sleeve top.

Margherita Missoni On Bringing Her Family’s Legacy To The Instagram Generation

$
0
0

Margherita Missoni had no chance in hell of being a minimalist. After all, she’s the granddaughter of Tai and Rosita, who founded the brand as a small Italian knitwear workshop back in 1953, and daughter of current creative director Angela, who solidified Missoni as the global fashion house we know today. At first, Margherita tells Refinery29, she tried to steer herself away from the maximalist aesthetic that made Missoni famous, but she kept finding herself drawn to the cacophony of colors, the plethora of patchworks, and of course, those zig zags.

Four years ago, Margherita left the family business to pursue her own career path — “I found it hard, decisions are made more emotionally than rationally when working with family” — but she was fighting against her DNA. She grew up in the very heart of the Missoni legacy. “We all lived pretty close to each other, and I was surrounded by my grandparents’ work, as well as the people who worked in the factory and atelier. It was the school of life for me, being exposed to people from different backgrounds with such different styles. But when I was working on my own, I had to stop myself from going too Missoni, because that’s my tendency — we all share the same aesthetic and style. The difference is, each one of us brings with us the time we’re living in: our own zeitgeist.”

And that’s exactly what she’s done with her first ever collection for M Missoni. Previously a brand license, the newly-revived, lower-priced M line is Missoni for a younger generation: a remixed, refreshed, revived Missoni. “M is about making clothes for real people,” she tells Refinery29 backstage ahead of her first collection presentation, having been appointed creative director last October. “If Missoni stands for fashion in the traditional sense, and is uncompromising in its aesthetic, then M is saturated with the needs of the people who wear them: the free-spirited, the irreverent, the playful. With M, I have flipped the well-known hit record and started to play the B-side.”

So how does one create something recognizably Missoni, while ensuring a fresh perspective? You go back to the very beginning. “Missoni was created with the objective of making an outfit that would take you effortlessly and elegantly from morning to evening,” Margherita explains. “That’s why they chose to specialize in knitwear and jerseys. But over the years, that concept was lost because the brand’s communication moved towards the luxury end of high fashion. I thought the origin of our brand would resonate with an audience today.”

The M mission is to “remix, re-use, and respect” its mother brand, and Margherita is doing this by mining the house’s archives for yarns, fabrics, and logos and spinning them into something new. This plays out in a collection that is unmistakably Missoni, but earmarked for a new generation. Heritage Missoni Sport (a trademark back in the ‘80s that wouldn’t look out of place on a Hypebeast in 2019) pieces are reworked into windbreakers, oversized jersey hoodies and tracksuit trousers via embroidery and tie-dye; space dye (one of the brand’s most celebrated knit effects) is cut up and embedded into new knitwear, making each piece’s yarn unique; vintage perfume logos are reworked as prints, and Missoni Home furnishing fabrics now make up coats and jackets.

The fact that everything in the collection is taken from something from the archives — “the print that never made it, the yarns that were never used” – makes the M brand feel even more contemporary: in an over-saturated and environmentally-damaging industry, recycling is finally becoming a smart (and cool) part of a business in 2019. Does Margherita consider her label sustainable? “I don’t want to claim it is, I don’t feel confident in that yet, even though we have great sustainability initiatives. This is about recycling and appropriating ideas. It’s about sharing a side of the brand that isn’t well known, and communicating that to a younger audience so they’re aware of the brand’s history.”

We’re introduced to Margherita’s idea of this audience on day two of Milan Fashion Week. Having been appointed creative director nearly one year ago, she’s had plenty of time to plan the perfect debut presentation. “I saw an old campaign photo of models in Missoni on a tram, and the tram really symbolizes Milan, so I ran with the concept.” Editors, having taken shelter from the Milanese sunshine with crisp lemonade, are treated to performances by energetic dancers with faces painted with old Missoni chevron stripes. A bright pink tram pulls up to the venue, and we alight alongside a gaggle of diverse models wearing the collection. We take a tour of the city, and at each stop, the models get off the tram as a new cohort hops on.

“Everyone is street-cast and almost everyone is from Milan, with the exception of a few friends who work in fashion,” Margherita says. There are women in their 70s in gold bralettes and flared knitted trousers, men in crop tops and skirts, and Gen Zers in sweater vests layered over workwear shirts. “Many are just people I knew I wanted to dress, but M is for everyone, and what unites them all is their approach to life: a lightness, a playfulness, irony — all qualities that you must possess in order to feel good in this world.”

As Margherita’s gang of models dance and strut and party on the fuschia tram to an eclectic soundtrack of Floyd Cramer, Andrew Bird, and The Soup Dragons, that playfulness is palpable. Along with Margherita’s inherited knack for color, perhaps this feeling is the antidote to all the darkness in the world right now.

Maisie Williams Goes Back To Her Roots At The Emmys — & We’re In Love

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – SEPTEMBER 22: Maisie Williams attends the 71st Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on September 22, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

Earlier this year, Maisie Williams started dyeing her hair a rainbow of fun colors. As you might expect, it was just after filming her very last scene of Game of Thrones that the actress tried bubblegum pink, then smoky lilac, and then bubblegum pink again. It was a way to signify that she was ready to take a bit of a hiatus from acting, and distance herself from her most iconic character, Arya Stark.

“I dyed it because I didn’t want to work,” Williams told Rolling Stone back in March. “I’ve battled my whole adolescence with trying to put a stamp on my appearance, but also be a blank canvas as an actor.”

But on Sunday night at the Emmys, Williams arrived clearly ready to act again with her hair dyed a color that’s much closer to her natural chocolate-brown hue. What’s more, she choose to style it into an Arya-esque bob with bangs.

“We wanted to take Maisie in a more mature direction as she is exploring new roles now that Game of Thrones has come to an end,” her hairstylist Ryan Richman said in an email. “The first step was changing her hair color from pink to a natural brunette.”

Fans on Twitter Immediately started freaked out over the new look for Williams, who had kept up her pink hair through the summer.

Williams is right on-trend with her new hairstyle with new bobs popping up on the likes of Bella Hadid and Ashley Benson in the past few weeks alone. Also, between her and Liv Tyler, we guess it’s official that blunt bangs are about to be everywhere this fall.

Billy Porter’s Husband Threw Him An Iconic Birthday Party Ahead Of The Emmys

Ahead of the 71st Emmys, Pose star and nominee Billy Porter found a way to make sure he was celebrated for his achievements on the screen — and in life. And Porter has his husband, Adam Smith, to thank.

Smith bravely threw Porter a party for the century in honor of Porter’s actual half-century (his 50th birthday) only a few days before the award show, attracting such guests as Ricky Martin, Hustler’s Trace Lysette, and Miss J Alexander, who also DJed the event. And while we know that Smith is quite the party planner, what else do we know about Porter’s husband?

Well, the two have quite the love story that goes back longer than you may think. The two first met in February of 2009, according to PEOPLE, through a mutual friend. They dated for a little, but finally split in 2010. It just wasn’t the right time. Cut to 2015: Porter and Smith find each other once again — this time at a brunch.

“I felt it, and the tears came, and I pulled over, and he said, ‘I love you, and I’ve always loved you, and if there’s any chance, I would like another shot — I would like us to have another shot at this,’” Porter told PEOPLE earlier this year. “He was the one that got away — so it wasn’t hard. The yes came easy and immediately!” The two got married two weeks later in January 2017.

In addition to being one-half of the best love story you’ll hear today, Smith is also the co-owner of Native Ken, a luxury eyewear brand based in NYC. He also knows how to style an A+ disco outfit.

Kit Harington Makes First Appearance Since Rehab & He’s All Smiles

The Emmys is a big night for everyone in TV, but this year’s Emmys is an especially monumental night for Game of Thrones. Before the award show even started on Sunday, September 22, the hit HBO series had already won 10 — yes, 10! — awards from sound editing to costumes, to main title design. It’s sure to win many more as the night goes on. And while all this is fantastic, all eyes are on the show’s star, Kit Harington, who makes his first appearance following his treatment at a mental health facility earlier this year.

Harington arrived at the red carpet around the same time as his co-stars Gwendoline Christie, who looked like a Grecian goddess, and Sophie Turner, sans her personal JoBro (he had a show in Kansas City). He’s up for lead actor in a drama series for his portrayal of Jon Snow.

Harington recently celebrated his first anniversary in June with actress Rose Leslie, who he met on the set of GOT. While Leslie wasn’t spotted on the red carpet since she’s no longer on the show, she’ll likely meet up with Harington at one of the after party celebrations.

The Unexpected Inspiration Behind Emilia Clarke’s Emmys Hair

$

Emilia Clarke is a pro at finding beauty inspiration in unique places, but more often than not, her looks tend to originate in episodes of Game Of Thrones. For example, for the show’s final series premiere, she wore her hair in dragon-inspired braids. But at tonight’s Emmy Awards, her red carpet look wasn’t pulled from Westeros, but from Hollywood. From Jennifer Lopez, to be exact.

Just before hitting the red carpet, the Emmy-nominated actress teased her glamorous beauty look with an Instagram selfie. “@emmys2019 WE BE ROLLLLLIN!” she wrote. “@jlo just as heads up you have inspired this years lewk.”

Yep, that Lopez — as in Grammy-nominated singer, performer, and star of 2019’s blockbuster hit Hustlers. Lopez also just happens to be a beauty icon, especially when it comes to red carpet hair moments. While Clarke’s makeup is low-key, it’s clear that her extra-long, back-grazing hair was pulled directly from the J.Lo archives.

British actress Emilia Clarke arrives for the 71st Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on September 22, 2019. (Photo by VALERIE MACON / AFP) (Photo credit should read VALERIE MACON/AFP/Getty Images)

Clarke isn’t a stranger to dramatic hair transformations, although this is surely her longest look in years. In fact, ditching one signature for another on the fly is sort of her thing — especially when debuting a new style just before a major red carpet. Her most recent change came at this year’s Academy Awards when she arrived showing off a new chocolate-brown bob. It might sound mundane, but the dark color came a year after Clarke bleached her natural brunette hair into a platinum blonde — a drastic look inspired by her role on GoT as Daenerys Targaryen (for which she’s nominated tonight).

Does this officially count as Clarke’s goodbye to her notable character? Probably — to many fan’s dismay. Still, we suppose it’s a much better look than Daenerys’ bald cap

After getting ready for a wedding, seventeen-year-old Zoe Laverne pulled out her iPhone, took a slow-mo video of herself twirling in her bedroom, and paired it with “Castle on the Hill” by Ed Sheeren. Two days later, the video has 337,000 likes and over 10,000 comments. Zoe, like a growing number of teen influencers, is well-known and loved for her videos on TikTok.

The app has gotten so big that the 2019 Emmys did a whole bit about it, but unless you’re a Gen Z’er, or are super hip and with the times, you might still think TikTok is just a Kesha bop from 2009. And while you’re not wrong, if you ask any young person under 20, they’ll tell you TikTok is their very lifeblood. A complete subculture, TikTok has taken the tweeny boppers by storm, leaving us millennials completely in the dust of Instagram and Facebook.

What is TikTok?

Originally launched in April 2014 as Musical.ly, TikTok is a lip-synching app that boasts over 500 million users worldwide. Musical.ly was purchased by Chinese company ByteDance in November 2017 and officially absorbed into their already existing app called TikTok in August 2018. The app is known for 15-second lip-synching videos, endless challenges (ex. The Mannequin Challenge), and making Millie Bobbie Brown’s friend, Jacob Sartorius, break the iTunes charts. A social media platform teeming with Gen Z users, TikTok is basically the new Vine, with a music twist.

What Does TikTok Do?

Originally made for lip-synching to your favorite songs, TikTok has exploded in all different directions. The feed is filled with fifteen-second vertical videos across genres — from dancing to gymnastics to short-form comedy— their one uniting factor is some kind of audio (either a song or voiceover). It has its own audio library, with a diverse catalog including popular songs and silly voiceovers (a la the emoji challenge), as well as Snapchat-esque filters. Users can garner likes and comments similar to Instagram, and, of course, like any other social media platform, TikTok has its very own influencers, called “Musers.”

Why Is TikTok In The News?

TikTok has made headlines for propelling country trap star Lil Nas X into the spotlight. After his single “Old Town Road” went viral via a meme on TikTok, the song found itself on top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs, but not on the Hot Country Songs chart — despite Lil Nas X identifying as a country artist. Only the third country song to hit the number one Hot 100 spot in thirty years, the exclusion from Hot Country Songs sparked a hot debate about race and the definition of country music itself.

The app is also somewhat controversial: The Government of India asked Google and Apple remove the app from their respective app stores. The Madras High Court originally asked for the ban months ago stating that the app was “inappropriate for children” and “encouraged pornography.” The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) has put a ban on downloading the app in India, though existing users have yet to lose access. Whether or not a complete ban will go into full effect is still up in the air, this isn’t the first time TikTok has been in the news for being a bad influence on children. Back in July 2018, Indonesia banned the app.

Who Are TikTok Girls?

Also known as egirls, the TikTok girls are 2019’s version of MySpace girls. With colorful hair, thick winged eyeliner, and a signature black heart under each eye, egirls are the ultimate cool girls. Though the term “egirl” can be sometimes used as a dig, many of these young influencers, such as, fattysalmonella34 (formerly thiccbeefcake69) and Ashley Eldridge, have garnered thousands of followers.

However, now a new type of TikTok girl has entered the ring: a VSCO girl.

Is TikTok Safe?

Like any other social media platform, there is always the possibility for inappropriate behavior, especially when minors are involved. TikTok’s parent company, Bytedance, does work to remove videos in violation of the Terms of Use, but that can only go so far. In recent months, many social media sites have taken action to protect young people on their platforms — for example, YouTube has disabled comments on videos made by minors to protect them from predators. Only time will tell how TikTok continues to fend off potential threats, but for now TikTok and its community of booty-shaking, challenge-accepting tweens is mostly harmless.

It was just one week ago that Kendall Jenner sent shockwaves through the Kardashian-Jenner universe when she debuted blonde hair for the first time ever at London Fashion Week.

But just as we were getting used to the new look, which didn’t appear to be a wig, Jenner’s back to being brunette. Though she was blonde less than 24 hours ago (as seen in her current Instagram Story), Jenner showed up with her hair dyed back to her natural dark brunette hair color to the 2019 Emmys tonight.

Stepping onto the red carpet with sister Kim Kardashian West, Jenner wore her hair slicked back into a tight bun. As her Instagram Story shows, this was quite the quickie hair color change for Jenner. That being said, we reached out to Tracey Cunningham, her go-to colorist (who was also behind her short-lived blonde) for all the details and will update this post when we hear back.

In addition to Jenner, Maisie Williams also used the Emmys red carpet to announce that she’d gone back to her natural dark brown roots, so we guess this is proof that sometimes you can’t get anything more gorgeous than your natural hue.

When it comes to red carpet beauty statements, Rachel Brosnahan likes to keep things pretty neutral. Most of the time, she ditches the signature, dramatic styling of her star role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and wears her blonde hair in loose waves. And makeup? It’s kept to a minimum. But for the 2019 Emmys red carpet, Brosnahan decided to switch things up a bit.

While wearing a dramatic, sequin blue gown by Elie Saab, Brosnahan rocked some unexpected electric blue eyeshadow — which began with ice-blue shimmer in the corners of her eyes and got smoky towards the outside — courtesy of her makeup artist Lisa Aharon.

Though we don’t know exactly what products were involved in Brosnahan’s stunning look, we do know that part of what makes it so damn good is that the actress opted to use the magic that is monochromatic makeup by matching her eyeshadow to her dress almost exactly.

Refinery29 has reached out to Aharon for details and will update this post when we hear back.

Alex Borstein’s Powerful Emmys Speech Included Holocaust Survivor & Immigrant Stories

As she accepted her second supporting actress Emmy win for her portrayal of comedy manager Susie on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Alex Borstein shared an inspiring story of how her grandmother survived the Holocaust.

After joking that she was not wearing underwear on stage after going braless at the 2018 Emmys, Borstein got suddenly serious.

The Amazon star — who attended the show with her longtime Family Guy co-star and friend Seth MacFarlane — dedicated her Emmy to “the strength of a woman,” citing her Marvelous Mrs. Maisel co-creator Amy Sherman-Palladino as well as her mother and grandmother. Both Borstein’s mother and grandmother are survivors of the Holocaust.

“My grandmother turned to a guard. She was in line to be shot into a pit, and she said, ‘What happens if I step out of line?’ [The guard] said, ‘I don’t have the heart to shoot you, but somebody will,’” Borstein shared with the crowd. “And she stepped out of line, and for that, I am here.”

The actress raised her Emmy and implored to the women in the audience to also “step out of line,” to cheers from the crowd.

This isn’t the first time Borstein has talked about being inspired by the women in her family.

“I grew up with very strong female role models,” she said in a May 2018 interview with The Wrap. “My mother is a powerhouse, but also very feminine and ladylike. My grandmother was a Holocaust survivor, a survivor in every sense of the word. Then there are some women I’ve come across in the entertainment industry — agents, managers, club bookers. There’s a little bit of all of them in there, but Susie is her own person.”

Borstein’s Emmy win followed Marvelous Mrs. Maisel co-star Tony Shalhoub’s win in the supporting actor category. The actor took the stage to thank the show’s creators, Daniel Palladino and Sherman-Palladino, for their contributions in writing, producing, and directing the series.

For Your Consideration: Zendaya’s Red Hair At The Emmys

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – SEPTEMBER 11: Actress Zendaya is seen arriving to Marc Jacobs Spring 2020 Fashion Show at Park Avenue Armory during New York Fashion Week on September 11, 2019 in New York City. (Photo by Gilbert Carrasquillo/GC Images)

Zendaya may not be nominated for an Emmy this year, but that doesn’t mean she can’t steal the spotlight — and she did. But the Euphoria star didn’t just show up in a custom emerald green Vera Wang gown and makeup that’s sure to inspire us for years to come, but with a striking new red hair color.

While this isn’t the first time Zendaya has rocked red hair, it is the boldest iteration on the color she’s tried. Earlier this summer, she dyed her brunette hair a bright shade of crimson while promoting her new film Spider-Man: Far From Home in London. While fans thought the color swap was a huge spoiler for her rumored role in the live-action Little Mermaid movie, Zendaya confirmed it — sadly — was not.

After the transformation, Zendaya took to Twitter to reveal that the inspiration behind the red hair didn’t come from the Ariel, but from original Spider-Man character, MJ. “MJ homage,” she wrote, confirming the semi-permanent red transformation was a nod to Mary Jane Watson, the Spider Man character known for her ‘do. Note: Zendaya doesn’t rock red hair as her version of MJ in Spider-Man: Far From Home, but Kirsten Dunst did when she famously portrayed the role in the 2002 Spider-Man franchise.

Before you think Zendaya’s red hair at the Emmys was simply a touch-up, you’re wrong. In fact, it wasn’t inspired by her at all, but by another comic great: The DC character Poison Ivy. Although Zendaya has yet to comment on the new look, her stylist Law Roach basically confirmed the inspo on Instagram earlier this evening by posting several photos of the Batman character — and it totally makes sense. The green and red color combination is sort of Poison Ivy’s thing — and now, we suppose, Zendaya’s, too.

So, does this mean Zendaya’s character, Rue, will be rocking the same bold color for Euphoria‘s anticipated second season? We hope so.

The Emmys Just Made A Really Bad Joke About The College Admissions Scandal

BOSTON, MA – SEPTEMBER 13: Felicity Huffman, right, and her husband, William H. Macy, walk out of John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse in Boston, MA on Sept. 13, 2019. Huffman was sentenced to 14 days in prison and community service for her role in the college admissions scandal. (Photo by Nic Antaya for The Boston Globe via Getty Images)

A week ago, actress Felicity Huffman received a two-week prison sentence for her involvement in a scheme to rig her daughter’s SAT test scores — and the Emmys made a joke about her predicament.

But the shade was subtle. You had to know who comedian Thomas Lennon was referencing during his speech as the Emmys faded out to a commercial break.

“The producers have asked me to give a special shoutout to any of our previous lead actress winners who are watching tonight from prison,” Lennon said with smarm. “Hopefully those two weeks are going to fly right by. Keep your chin up.”

Unlike what Lennon implied, Huffman isn’t currently prison. She needs to turn herself in by October 25.

Reactions on Twitter ranged from “cringe so good” to “cringe so bad.” So the Internet’s response was mixed. According to one Twitter user, though, the joke didn’t land in the actual Emmys theater.

Times have certainly changed since 2005, when Huffman won an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy for her work in Desperate Housewives. This year, Huffman played controversial New York prosecutor Linda Fairstein in much-nominated When They See Us.

Now, association with the scandal eclipses Huffman’s work as an actress. The story has already gotten the Lifetime movie treatment, with more adaptations on the way.

Maisie Williams’ Custom J.W. Anderson Dress At The Emmys Has Quite The Backstory

Arya Stark’s ride on the Game of Thrones wheel might be over, but that doesn’t mean that Maisie Williams is slowing down. The 22 year-old Bristol-born actress has spent a majority of September hopping from fashion show to fashion show, sitting alongside her rumored beau, Reuben Selby, at Helmut Lang’s show in New York and J.W. Anderson’s in London. After all, what person in their right mind would even think of taking a break after filming one of, if not the, most intense and over-the-top shows in television history for eight straight years starting at the ripe age of 11? Not Maisie Williams, that’s for sure.

Despite her stacked social calendar, Williams still found time to go a step above the rest of her fellow 2019 Emmys attendees. How? By designing her dress from scratch. To create her black, beaded gown, the GoT star worked side-by-side with J.W. Anderson creative director, Jonathan Anderson, and (drum roll please) her designer boyfriend, Reuben Selby.

“I asked Reuben if he would design something with me in mind: my height, my shape, my likes and insecurities,” Williams told Elle. “He must’ve drawn up around 30 sketches, but we picked our favorite ones and it just so happened that Jonathan preferred our favorite sketch.” Great minds think alike when you’ve got a trio like this one.

The dress, which features an asymmetric hemline, a sheer skirt and crystal detailing on both the exposed spaghetti straps and the bold, yet stated hip accessory, falls perfectly in line with Williams’ ubiquitous sartorial choices: classic with a touch of punk. Correct us if we’re wrong, but who else could totally see a 2019 Arya Stark designing the exact. same. thing?

Every 2019 Emmy Award Game of Thrones Won, Including Peter Dinklage’s Record-Breaker

Usually, there’s at least a little mystery when it comes to the Emmys. That’s what gives viewers fun surprise wins like last year’s unstoppable Marvelous Mrs. Maisel sweep

2019 has no such mystery. Everyone knows the 71st Emmys Awards, airing Sunday, September 22, belong to Game of Thrones. Even after that controversial six-episode finale season.

This year’s Emmys aren’t just about awarding those few hours of farewell television. It’s about celebrating the HBO blockbuster that changed TV forever. Not only did the fantasy series confirm you could still have bona fide hits at a time when audience viewership was plummeting throughout the industry. It also proved television — traditionally the ugly step-sister of pop culture — could be bigger, splashier, and more extravagant than most movies ever dreamed.

At a time when television is questioning what the future holds, Game of Thrones remained a beacon of water cooler success for the decade. That is why it’s dominating the Emmys. It also doesn’t hurt that GoT‘s cast — including Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Sophia Turner, Maisie Williams, and several other 2019 Emmy nominees — is universally beloved.

That’s why Peter Dinklage broke the Outstanding Supporting Actor record on Sunday night with his fourth win for playing Tyrion Lannister.

Now that the technical-heavy 2019 Creative Arts Emmys are wrapped and the 2019 Primetime Emmys are nigh, it’s time to find out just how successful Game of Thrones can be. This is every award GoT has won, from the most famously contentious races to the categories you didn’t even know about. We’ll be updating as more inevitable victories are announced.

By the end of Emmys night, Game of Thrones may have more gold than the Lannisters.

Lena Headey Prepped For The Emmys By Getting A New Tattoo

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – SEPTEMBER 22: Lena Headey attends the 71st Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on September 22, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by John Shearer/Getty Images)

Lena Headey may have spent the last decade playing the ruthless Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones, but in real life she is, and looks, nothing like her famous character. While Cersei was famous for her honey-blonde hair (a Lannister signature), Headey is recognizable for her brunette lob. And while Cersei didn’t have any tattoos at all, Headey has a long-running penchant for ink. In fact, her collection includes at least 13 — but more after tonight.

It appears that sometime before arriving to the 2019 Emmy Awards, Headey was inside the famed studio of L.A. tattoo artist Dr. Woo, adding a sizable design to her right hand. The GoT actress showed off the new ink — a detailed illustration of a beetle — on Instagram on Sunday afternoon. “[Dr. Woo] you master,” she wrote in the caption. “Already in the next realm with my scarab.”

But Headey’s new tattoo isn’t just a design of any kind of beetle, but a scarab beetle. Most people may recognize the insect as the same tiny, flesh-eating bug from the 1999 movie The Mummy, but the scarab beetle also has a significant role in ancient Egyptian history. It turns out, the heavy-bodied beetle was associated with divine manifestation, often serving as a symbol for development and growth.

The jury is out on whether or not we’re still terrified of the beetles, but to no one’s surprise, Headey is clearly not. In fact, we dare say the symbolic gesture is a nod to her swan song on Game of Thrones. As she said, onto the next realm…
